Linux binary woes

Post by Darklord42 »

Hi,

First of all, thank you so much for reviving this project and giving it the love it so deserves!

I fear I am having issues with the linux binary shipped (this is on 2.0.5 though I should note the download link on the page still goes to 2.0.4) When I launch the executable i get

Code: Select all

error while loading shared libraries: libdxcompiler.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Google says libdxcompiler is a windows library so not sure what's with that, but over all not surprising. Linux binary packaging is a real pain and anything you compile is really only good for the system you compiled it on unless you want to attempt to statically link everything which probably isn't viable anyway. It's why formats like AppImage and Flatpak were created. I'd try compiling a binary myself but the links to the sourcecode are still pointing to an old DietfridMali/D2X-XL github that was deleted, and I presume isn't your sourcecode anyway.

In the mean time, I can run the windows vulcan binary in wine just fine (Have to do that with the old 1.0 release as that never compiled well in linux either)

Thanks again!

For me, I'm using Bazzite and I run it in Steam desktop mode using the proton experimental version.
Maybe try installing Steam and add the game to that to launch from?
I don't know much about a native Linux launcher for D2X-XL other than running from Steam. :clue:
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 16-Core Processor
Graphics Processor 1: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

libdxcompiler is not a windows binary. Don't trust AI, you always need to tell it to fact check its replies. I guess you got that answer because there's "dx" in the name which points to DirectX. However, how can a ".so" file be a windows library? It's the HLSL compiler frontend which was developed for DirectX, but is also used by Vulkan, as Vulkan uses HLSL like DirectX does.

Running executables compiled on different Linux distro than yours is less a problem of the executable itself than of the binaries; and since d2x-xl only uses standard libraries you just need to figure which libs you gotta install (e.g. SDL2). You could ask Google's AI for that free of charge, just in the web browser.

Anyhow, there should be a way to allow d2x-xl to be run on most Linux distros (at least as long as they are not too far behind their current versions) by using a runtime toolbox and putting all required libs into the installation archive. That's what I have to do for Paintjob Rampage for distribution via Steam. I am currently building that for D2X-XL.

Well, the first place I checked is Fedora's repos which came up empty. Regardless I'd have to compile the dxcompiler myself.

I was under the impression steam linux apps tend to run on the steam runtime libraries (solder, scout, sniper,4.0) as oppose to what's on the OS, that way they should be working from a consistent environment?

Anyway is the sourcecode for d2x-xl available?

@AusRed5, Yes, proton works on the windows executable as does wine-staging. That's fine if that's the only option. But there was talk about getting it to run natively

libdxcompiler.so should work on any Linux distro with a GLIBC 2.30 or up. I wouldn't know why you should have to compile it. I wouldn't even know where to get the source code for it.

Yesterday, Claude and I linked every lib statically that could be handled like that. We downloaded the SDL 2 and OpenAL source code to build these libs and those they depend on. So starting with v2.0.6, D2X-XL's dependencies on external libraries are minimal, it's only seven libraries, and the only one not everybody might have on his/her system is libdxcompiler.so, which is why I bundled it with the Linux d2x-xl binary. I also built everything in Steam's Sniper toolbox.

If you haven't done so, please try v2.0.6, and if it doesn't work, please cd to your d2x-xl game folder, enter "ldd ./d2x-xl" (without the double quotes) and post the output here. I want to get this work and I curious where there are still things missing.

Yup! Just tried 2.0.6. It looks like your staticly linked efforts worked. Thank you!
